Highly Doped Ytterbium Fibers

Thorlabs offers state-of-the-art ytterbium doped optical fibers for optical amplifiers, ASE light sources, and high-power pulsed and CW fiber laser applications. Neodymium doped fibers are available for custom orders. These fibers, manufactured by Liekki Ltd. in Finland, are fabricated using the latest doped fiber production technology – Liekki Direct Nanoparticle Deposition (DND). Applications in the fast growing fiber laser and high-power amplifier segments require short fiber lengths, flat refractive index profiles without core burnout, and large core-to-cladding ratio (large mode area double clad fibers). Liekki DND technology was designed with the requirements of these advanced fiber applications in mind.

Good fiber applications also require good design. Thorlabs makes the design process easy by offering the Liekki Application Designer software – a simulation tool designed for EDFAs, ASE light sources, and high-power fiber amplifiers and lasers. This software models highly doped large mode area fibers accurately. Using fibers should also be easy: Liekki EasySplice software provides splicing parameters. Design guidelines, technical support documents and other material are also available. For customers who do not want to work with fibers on their own, complete fiber subassemblies are available – the Liekki Fiber Optical Engines product family.

Available Ytterbium Doped Fibers

The Yb1200 family of highly doped ytterbium fibers is designed for fiber amplifiers, continuous wave (CW) and pulsed fiber lasers from mW to over 100W output power levels, operating in the 1µm wavelength region. These fibers, fabricated using Liekki Direct Nanoparticle Deposition (DND) technology, make it possible to reduce the required fiber lengths and to reduce nonlinear effects.

Yb1200-4/125
Liekki Yb1200-4/125 is a highly doped ytterbium fiber for low noise, low nonlinearity preamplifiers and lasers. Its telecom like geometry makes the fiber compatible with low cost pump diodes and standard single mode passive fibers.

Yb1200-10/125DC
Liekki Yb1200-10/125DC is a single mode double clad fiber for medium power fiber amplifiers and lasers in the 1-20W output power range. A PM version is also available (Yb1200-10/125DC-PM).

Yb1200-20/400DC
Liekki Yb1200-20/400DC is a large mode area double clad fiber for very high power fiber amplifiers and lasers in the 20-500W output power range. This fiber has a high power tolerance and excellent beam quality. A PM version is also available (Yb1200- 20/400DC-PM).

Yb1200-30/250DC
Liekki Yb1200-30/250DC is a large mode area double clad fiber for pulsed fiber lasers. Its high pump absorption makes this fiber well suited for short pulse and high peak power applications, as fiber lengths can be shortened dramatically. A PM version is also available (Yb1200-30/250DC-PM).

 

Production Notes
Liekki has stopped production of the following fibers due to concerns about photo darkening. However, they plan to reintroduce this fiber in the near future. According to the manufacturer there is a 1:1 relation to the amount of fiber required for the alternative fibers listed in the table below.
